Elbe Island Wilhelmsburg Tour Reiherstiegviertel

"Willytown"—that's what we long-time residents affectionately call the Elbe island, and even today we sometimes have to defend our neighborhood. Wilhelmsburg is Hamburg's largest and greenest district, which sounds good, but as a port and working-class district, Wilhelmsburg had a negative image for decades and, if at all, attracted attention through negative headlines. Nobody wanted to live here, let alone move there.
In 2003, city planners developed the “Jump over the Elbe” to improve the quality of life and enhance the district.
Almost 20 years later, a lot has changed here, and now, even north of the Elbe, Wilhelmsburg is perceived as what it has always been: colorful, vibrant, and diverse. We start our tour at Stübenplatz. Here, at the former "Pudding," a fine restaurant scene has developed in recent years. We continue toward the dike, where, with a bit of luck, we might spot peacefully grazing sheep, while giant container towers are stacked in the background.

Passing by charming Wilhelminian-era house facades, we continue to the Honigfabrik cultural center. Wilhelmsburg is not only surrounded by water; the island also boasts waterfront promenades, such as the Vering Canal. When the weather's nice, the locals bustle here. Afterwards, we'll show you the bunker, which was converted into an energy bunker during the 2013 International Building Exhibition. With its viewing platform, the bunker is a popular tourist destination.
The diversity and contrasts of the district - a green idyll with a village character, but also an industrial location with a romantic harbor backdrop - make up the charm of the Elbe island and are unique in Hamburg.
In addition to these highlights, we naturally don't neglect the exciting history of Wilhelmsburg, and as islanders who grew up here, we always have a personal anecdote at the ready. The positive and negative aspects that the leap across the Elbe meant for us residents are also discussed.

Inselpark

an experience in itself

Our tour ends directly at the Inselpark. The 85-hectare site is a legacy of the 2013 International Garden Show and an experience in itself. Several innovative buildings from the IBA, which also took place in Wilhelmsburg, are also located on the grounds, offering a glimpse into the future of construction.

Bike tour!

Elbe Island Beauties

You've now gotten to know the lively and colorful Willitown. If the weather's nice, we recommend a bike tour. You'll be amazed at how quickly you can leave the city behind. You can rent your bike at the Wilhelmsburg bike rental or at the StadtRad station. Must-sees: Minitopia, Finkenriek Elbe beach, Moorwerder with the Heuckenlock nature reserve—one of the last tidal floodplain forests in Europe, Bunthäuser Spitze with its lighthouse, Johanna windmill, and the children's farm.
